Observation Narrative
A spectacular and diverse woodland containing species with basic tendencies and those with acidic tendencies. Presence of taxa such as Solidago ulmifolia, Tradescantia virginiana, Phacelia dubia, and Triosteum perfoliatum argue for classification of this community as a basic woodland, however. Modules 1, 2, 9 and 10 chosen as focal modules to capture Deschampsia zone in near end of plot. In retrospect sampling two, perhaps smaller, plots may have been better strategy. More open portion of stand, along convex spine of ridge above Smith Mountain Dam, contains strong dominance by Deschampsia flexuosa. Along the contour to the east, composition shifts to more diverse assemblage of forbs beneath taller canopy of Carya glabra.
